October 4
First board the NewTygart Flyer for a 23-mile trip that begins with a twisting
2.5% climb out of the Tygart River valley. At the top of the 5 mile grade, the
train plunges into a tunnel, 1,800 feet long and built on an “S” curve, this is
always a crowd pleaser.
It reappears on the Cheat River side of the 4,000’ elevation mountain and
descends down to the valley below. Another climb then begins that
culminates with a high bridge over the swirling river and a
3% grade featuring a 19-degree curve in a deep canyon area. Then make a
45-minute stop at the “High Falls of the Cheat”, an inspirational place located
far from any human activity.
A set of trails and steps leads you to the waterfall and
includes a viewing platform. The falls, 150’ wide and 18’ high, are situated in a
spruce and laurel grove.
At this point, the railroad makes a sweeping 33-degree curve, and to
negotiate this and others like it farther on you will board the one-of-a-king
Cheat Mountain Salamander railbus. The Salamander takes you on a 21-mile
ride through the heart of the Cheat Mountain Wilderness, where Bear, Bobcat,
and other
exotic wildlife are regularly seen This car is a replica of a 1922 Edwards
Railway Motor Car Company Doodlebug” and was
specially built for the tight curves on this ex-logging line.
Next it’s the Durbin Rocket for a 2 hour 10 mile round trip along the upper
Greenbrier River. This ride transports you into another remote area with
numerous scenic and wildlife view
opportunities. Your train is powered by #3, a 1910, 55 ton,
two-truck Climax steam locomotive, built for the Moore-Keppel & Company of
nearby Ellamore, WV.
